Environmental Awareness Jewelry by Swaantje Guentzel
The Hamburg based artist, Swaantje Guentzel, has created jewelry from plastic garbage that was found in the stomach of a dead Albatross. Cynthia Vanderlip, a biologist in Hawaii, found 300 pieces of garbage in one dead Albatross which in turn was sent to Hamburg. Over 40% of the Laysan Albatross chicks die from malnutrition due to all the plastic that is ingested from their food sources in the sea. A portion of the jewelry proceeds are going to benefit a bird station on the Kure Atoll.
