Colorado’s White River Valley, with its pristine waters and the 235,000-acre Flat Tops Wilderness, has long been acknowledged as one of the premier fly-fishing regions in North America. Beginning in the late 1940s, Bill Wheeler’s family began buying property there, and since 1988, Wheeler, an angler of no small renown, had operated an acclaimed commercial fishing lodge a few miles outside the town of Meeker.
