49 Days by Zhang Huan

Artists Zhang Huan is showing his first solo event, 49 Days at Blum & Poe in LA. The work is a collection of brick sculptures that focuses on the concept of endurance. The work centers on Zhu Gangqiang (Cast-Iron Pig), which survived for 49 days during the Sichuan earthquake of 2008. The bricks Huan uses are also salvaged from demolished buildings in China. 49 days also has significance in that, that is the amount of time believed by Buddhists that the soul remains on earth during death and reincarnation.
