Compact Laminate Work Surface

This stunning desk top was created from compact laminate, sometimes referred to as solid phenolic. The material is a favorite for architects and designers either in ultra-thin applications due to compact laminate's incredible strength or as a design material in this 2 12" thick desk top. The striped look was created in the manufacturing process by using alternating layers of bleached and black saturating kraft paper from Kapstone. The saturated papers are cured under heat and extreme pressure in a laminating press Over 200 sheets of saturating kraft were used in this application. The 7 ft. x 2 ft. work surface weighs nearly 1000 pounds, yet provides an elegant look to this home office. Compact laminate is in reality, a thicker version of high pressure laminate HPL produced in a similar way.
