Pipelet Parklet

Project Description: In 2017, Youth Art Exchange (YAX) youth architects from the YAX Architecture Firm, lead by faculty architect Kali Gordon and John OConnell High School Construction Instructor Chris Wood, developed an innovative parklet design utilizing reclaimed cedar and conduit pipes for an open and green design. These public high school youth architects built the parklet on their collaborative design inspired by the schools mascot the boilermaker and an affordable, repetitive component, electrical conduit, which creates visual impact. On the construction side, our primary focus has been the construction of the Pipelet, an on going YAX youth designed parklet to be installed at John OConnell high school in the Mission neighborhood this fall. The Pipelet is conceived of as a public space to enhance the street scape of the Mission, spark street-level community activities, and provide YAX youth with an opportunity to design and shape their city.
